The Mazda is currently sitting on damaged 225/45 19, this tire size is very hard to find in stock i want to downsize to 18’s as there is a wider variety of tires and wheels. Do any of you have experience with downsizing in wheel size? What can i expect performance wise?

all of our cars go down a size for the winters.

you will need to go UP a size in the sidewall (so, you would have to find a 225/50/18) for that.

it will be a touch squishier in the turning, but less likely to bend a wheel in a pothole and will actually get you SLIGHTLY better fuel econ.

you can play with the width one size skinnier/wider as well
(or, if possible, go down ANOTHER size to 225/55/17..but see if that will clear the brakes)

http://www.tire-size-calculator.info/
This link will give you quick and dirty help finding a size in 18" compared to your original 19" wheels/tires that won’t throw off your speedometer and odometer as much.

BUT , more importantly - THIS site is better:

https://ejelta.com/tiresize/index.html?ws21=1&tiresize=225%2F45%2F19&maxdelta=2&minwidth=&maxwidth=&minratio=&maxratio=&minwheel=18&maxwheel=18

That link should show you 18" tire sizes that nearly directly match the diameter size of 19" wheels/tires that won’t throw off your speedo or odo . I’ve used both of these sites for years! :)

225/50R18 should be basically the same outer diameter and width, while 215/55R18 and 235/50R18 would also be close on the diameter and 0.4" narrower/wider respectively.

I’d guess you’d be fine with any of those three without causing issues, though there’s always the chance of rubbing if you go wider.

Otherwise, having a thicker sidewall might slightly hurt cornering performance, but for road use, I don’t think you’d even notice, you’d just maybe have a slightly smoother ride, and more pothole protection.

There’s also a risk that your brakes are too big, but that seems unlikely here, and except in the case of extreme performance models, a -1 wheel is usually fine (many people like them for snow tires).

I don’t go down a size but do go from 205/50R16 RE71 (super sticky autocross tire with a stiff sidewall) to Blizzaks (195/55R16) on the Mini amd its fine. Car become a more wallowy with Blizzaks and ride becomes more comfortable.

A few years back I helped a friend go from a 20 to a 17 on his Cadillac XTS (I think). I don't know the exact sizes, but the diameter was almost exactly the same but was an inch narrower. It made a huge difference in ride quality, but was squishier on turn-in. It was on a FWD big caddy, so nothing was really lost.

I just check the revolutions per mile on tirerack to make sure itll be as similar as possible. I did the same downsize, 19 to 18, this winter and it's been fine. Winters feel softer in the turns, but that's expected.

Ditto what peter black said.  I ran 19” for summer and 18” for winters when I had my S4.  Slightly squishier, but not bad at all, and that was winter rubber, so it was more flexible and prone to squirm anyway.  I don’t think you will mind the trade off.

I’ve used this site with success before:

https://tiresize.com/calculator/

Tabs will allow you to compare different tire sizes, shows measurement differences as well as speedometer correction/error.

As a bonus, it will show tires for sale (with links) for the size you input.

It says 225/50R18s are an almost exact diame ter match. Of course you could go wider if you want improved handling/traction, but 235/55/R18 is a less common size...

Am i looking at any other modifications after going to a 18 or should it all be a straight forward swap?

You might need hub centering rings for the new wheels, and also possibly different lug nuts.

It should be a straight forward swap. Just make sure you don't have absolutely massive brakes or something thatd cause clearance issues. And of course offset has to be correct, but that's the case for any wheel choice.

Thanks it looks like the offset is going to be 45 i found a thread on a forum where a member did the swap.
